The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is one of the architectural gems of Žatec and forms a wonderful dominant feature of the ancient city center. We can find it on Hošťálek Square, behind the Town Hall, near the Priest's Gate. On the site of today's church stood the original Romanesque parish church of the settlement on the forecourt of the Žatec castle, which is first mentioned in 1004 (the first documented reports come from 1206). In 1336, Jan of Luxembourg donated tithes to the city for the reconstruction of the church, and in 1336-1380 a Gothic building was built on the original site. In 1380, the foundations were laid for the bell tower. The Baroque significantly affected the appearance of the building. In the years 1770–1773, the wooden part of the bell tower was replaced by a massive south tower, built by P. Losch.
