V	Vladimir Pecha on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The picturesque historical center of Klášterec lies at an altitude of 320 meters in the valley of the Ohře River between the Krušné and Doupovské Mountains and today it has about 15,000 inhabitants (of course together with the "new town"). The beginnings of settlements in this area probably date back to prehistoric times. The origin of the city itself lies between 1150 and 1250 in connection with the provostship, which was built here at that time by the Benedictines of Postoloprty. However, it is still unclear whether this small monastery was built by an existing settlement or vice versa. Soon a church with a rectory and a cemetery was built here, probably also a monastery school. In 1277 King Přemysl Otakar II. abolished the provostship and attached all it´s property to the Czech royal crown. Malebné historické jádro Klášterce leží v nadmořské výšce 320 metrů v údolí Ohře mezi Krušnými a Doupovskými horami a dnes tu žije kolem 15 000 obyvatel. Počátky osidlování zdejšího území spadají pravděpodobně do období pravěku. Vznik samotného města kladou historici mezi roky 1150 a 1250 v souvislosti s proboštstvím, které zde v této době vybudovali postoloprtští benediktýni. Dodnes však není jasné, byl-li tento malý klášter postaven u již existující osady či naopak. Brzy zde byl postaven také kostel s farou a hřbitovem, pravděpodobně zde byla také klášterní škola. Roku 1277 král Přemysl Otakar II. zdejší proboštství zrušil a jeho majetek přičlenil ke královské koruně.
