The mission of the Czech Geological Survey, which dates back to 1919, is to perform the state geological survey in the Czech Republic. It collects and processes data on the geological composition of the state territory and transmits them to administrative authorities. The headquarters, library and archive are housed in the Empire building of the former Klára's Institute, built partly between 1836-44 according to the plans of Vincenc Kulhánek and with the participation of Josef Kranner. It was completed according to the original concept by Victor Skuček in the years 1884-1885. Until the end of the 18th century, a fence with a baroque "house of scribes" lay on the site of today's building. In the first third of the 19th century, Emperor Francis I donated the land to Dr. Alois Klar in order to build a shelter for the blind. Construction began on May 17, 1836. In the first stage of construction, a chapel was built according to the design of J. Kranner. Since the 1950s, the building has been gradually adapted for various users; today, the aforementioned Czech Geological Survey is located here.
