BEWARE of unfair tactics of Czech banks, exchange offices, hotels and particularly ATMs. We made a cash withdrawal at this ATM and, as we already knew about these dirty tactics, we were aware. But even that didn’t help because they make changes to the system in order to make the process more and more misleading. The exchange rate on that day according to the ATM was 23.11 €. The exchange rate according to Mastercard was 25,88. It’s a huge difference of about 12%! How not to get robbed by a Czech ATM? 1. Choose an amount to be withdrawn. 2. The ATM will display the withdrawn amount in CZK and it will offer to make the currency conversion for you. Do NOT agree as the offered exchange rate will be very unfair. But at least it will be displayed on the screen. 3. The ATM will display the withdrawn amount again, this time in your currency. This is the point where we got fooled. The exchange rate was not displayed and we simply did not realize that the currency conversion will still be made by the ATM or some Czech bank, company, whatever. Do NOT agree once more as the exchange rate will be the same as before. 4. Continue as usually but be careful. They can make the process less straightforward and add another misleading confirmation screen at any time. I’m not absolutely sure whether a review on Maps is the right place for a “walk-through” but I really hope this will help somebody. :)
