Karlstejn is a medieval royal castle, located about 30 km southwest of Prague. It lies in the middle of the protected landscape area of the Bohemian Karst. Karlštejn has been opened to the public since 1905 and is one of the most visited monuments in the Czech Republic

Karlštejn Castle was founded around 1348 as a private representative seat of the Roman emperor and Czech king Charles IV. Later, the emperor decided to use the castle as a space for storing the imperial coronation jewels and a holy relics.

The most valuable preserved spaces in Karlštejn are the Chapel of St. Catherine and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the Marian Tower and the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Great Tower. The uniquely preserved wall decoration of all the mentioned chapels, consisting of frescoes and inlaid strips is an example of the advanced artwork of the late Middle Ages. A unique feature of the castle is a set of 129 Gothic panel paintings decorating the walls of the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which is unparalleled in its size in the world. In addition to the architecture, visitors also come here nowadays to admire the replica of the St. Wenceslas crown.

In addition to its own guided tours, Karlštejn offers a number of cultural and social events every year, such as concerts, theatres, exhibitions, the Karlštejn Cultural Summer, the Royal Parade and the traditional Karlštejn Vintage.
