The first evidence of local settlement today dates back to the late Mpaleolithic (10,000 - 8,000 BC). In the 5th and 6th centuries, the Slavs began to settle in the area. The history of Horažďovice has long been connected with nearby Práchná. Already in the 10th century a fortified fort was built here and about two centuries later the stone castle became the administrative center of the Prácheň region, which in the 13th century included approximately today's Horažďovice, Sušice, Kašperskohorsko, Strakonice and Vimpersko. The oldest reports (from 1251), concerning Horažďovice, speak of the settlement of Gorazdějovice, founded by the priest Gorazd, a pupil and successor of St. Methods. In 1292, the settlement was promoted to a town by King Wenceslas II. The city gained city rights, especially the right of fortification, and in a short time it was fortified. Quiet place. Beautifully and sensitively renovated square. Red gate with interesting sgraffito.
