The picturesque Zátkova nábřeží street describes the outer perimeter of the historic city center on the south-west side and at the same time following both banks of the Malše. The oldest construction activity on the waterfront is associated with the construction of the city fortifications, which began in the second half of the 13th century. As part of its development, a fence wall was erected directly on the river bank. Its passability was enabled on a selected section of the later embankment by a drawbridge in front of the Rožnov Gate. Passage to the river was ensured by 2 water gates in the western part of the fortifications, the Salt Gate and the Fisherman's Gate. The remarkable Golden Bridge was probably built at the same time as the town was founded, and a road leading to the Rožnov Gate led through it. The last part of the bridge deck in front of the gate was modified as a drawbridge, while the bridgehead on the left bank was secured in the 16th and 17th centuries by a special fortress element, a barbican. The great importance that the inhabitants of České Budějovice attached to the bridge, along which the buyers came in the direction from Linz and brought considerable profits to the town, was reflected in the name Zlatý. In 1881, the iron structure replaced the previous one. It was manufactured by the Prague Engineering Joint-Stock Company from Liben. From 1910, a regular tram line ran across the Golden Bridge, the operation of which was limited due to the reduced load-bearing capacity of the bridge. In 1915, the company Bratři Prášilové from Prague's Libno supplied a new, more massive structure with two characteristic riveted arches, which has a span of 40.2 meters. Its accessibility was allowed on the selected section of the later embankment by a lift bridge in front of Rožnovská brána. The great importance that the inhabitants of České Budějovice placed to the bridge, after which the buyers arrived in the direction of Linz and brought significant profits to the city, reflected in the name of it - the Golden bridge.
