Marian Column - nám. Republiky 301 00

The plague column of Santa María, is the work of the sculptor of this city Kristian Widman in 1681. The ensemble was commissioned and paid for by the city's bourgeoisie, in gratitude that the city had been saved from the plague in 1680. At the top of the column is a Baroque replica of the Virgin of Pilsen.

Beautiful, yet it was not destroyed in 1918 "patriots" as in Prague.

The Renaissance Marian column on the Republic Square was built by the city council in 1681. The decision to build the column was made in 1680 after averting the first great plague epidemic in Pilsen, during which the famous Emperor Rudolf II took refuge in the city. The foundation stone was laid in November 1680 by Archdeacon Jan Alexus Čapek, and the stonemason Jan Mejlík and sculptor Kristián Widman were responsible for the construction. The column, completed in 1681, was expanded in 1714 after another epidemic. Statues of St. Bartholomew, St. Rocha, vol. Florian, St. Wenceslas and St. Rosalie was completed by three more - a statue of St. Francis Xavier, St. Peter of Alcantara and St. Barbory. The column is finished with a Gothic sculpture of the Pilsen Madonna. It was reconstructed in the 1990s. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
