The Masaryk Square, with an altitude of 277 meters, forms the medieval city center. Archaeological finds confirm the prehistoric settlement of the city and it´s surroundings from the older Stone Age. The first written report about Slaný dates from 1262, when it is named by Přemysl Otakar II. among the towns, giving part of the market fees to the monastery of St. Jiří on the Prague Castle. At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, Václav II granted so called Magdeburg Right (Das Magdeburger Recht) - the dominant type of urban law in Bohemia, when the Magdeburg City Court was the highest authority for all mantioned areas. At the beginning of the Hussite storms, the town was ranked together with Plzeň, Žatec, Louny, Písek and Klatovy with the only ones to be saved. Since the middle of the 15th century, the town has been inclined towards the unity of Poděbrady, and the devotees of Jiří z Poděbrad remained slavists even during his reign. The economic development of the city continued beyond Vladislav Jagellonski and in the beginning of the Habsburg rule. The growth of the city stopped after the loss of Bohemian states in the White Mountain, when the local population stood on the side of the losers.
