A beautiful and impressive place on the site of a former cemetery is directly connected with the establishment of the city - the monastery of St. Dominica with the Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary is one of the oldest architectural monuments in České Budějovice. It is named after the Piarist order, which moved to the premises of the Dominican convent in 1785. Unique prehistoric finds document the settlement of this place as early as the Bronze Age (about 1300-1000 BC) and later in the late La Tène period (1st century BC). Already in the 13th century, shortly after the founding of the city, it was built on the square. one of the city cemeteries. It was delimited by the Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary and the lines of Hroznová Street and Česká Street. On the west side, it reached to the main wall. In 1740, a column of the Holy Trinity by J. Dietrich was erected on it. From the second half of the 18th century, however, adjustments related to its abolition began. The column was moved to the new entrance gate from Česká street, opposite the sculpture of Calvary by J. Dietrich from 1731. From the gate to the entrance to the convent, statues of St. Anne (1741), St. Jáchym (1743), St. Dominic and St. Vincent ( both 1745) and St. Zechariah (1746), all by J. Dietrich. The area of ​​the abolished cemetery gradually began to be used as a marketplace. In 1995, the surface of the square was newly paved - the modification symbolizes the original designation of the square as a cemetery. In addition to the central cross, which is laid out in the paving of the cross, it is reminiscent of symbolic tombstones, complemented by a rosary motif. Hroznová Street between Masné krámy and Komerční banka will soon take us to Piarist Square. It is named after the grammar school, which was established here by the Piarist order and which was housed in the monastery buildings. Together with the adjacent Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary, it is the oldest architectural monument in České Budějovice. The fact that the square is located on the site of a former cemetery is also remarkable, which reminds us of a cross in the pavement and also symbolic tombstones.
