Socha velkého básníka a spisovatele od Willibalda Russe z roku 1932 stojí naproti kapli sv. Anny. The statue of a great poet and writer from Willibald Russe from 1932 stands opposite the Chapel of St. Anna just in front of only one medieval city entrance. Goethe often visited Loket and celebrated his 74 birthday with Mrs. Levetzow and her daughters. The poet fell in love with the young Ulrika von Levetzow, and he also experienced frustration when the parents of Ulrika refused his request for a marriage. Then Goethe never returned to Loket.

The statue of Johann Wolfgang Goethe is a strict representation that does justice to the writer and poet. Dressed in a coat, he looks venerable, a claim that he had secretly. With his "Faust" he gained the reputation of genius. In practical life, on the other hand, he had to put up with disgrace at mature age because of his hopeless infatuation with a young girl, a bad damper and the mockery of the public who learned about it. He wore this outwardly with composure, placing his dignity in the foreground. This Goethe is aptly portrayed with the aesthetically successful sculpture.

At every turn you wonder how much Goethe you meet in Loket. (We were in Goslar two weeks ago and there Goethe met one. But he was incognito because he was specifically engaged in espionage in the mine. Therefore he was checked into the hotel under the name "Weber". He was nevertheless recognized.) And only now in Loket did I understand why he came here so often. In Germany he was known like a colorful dog, he was a celebrity of his time. But no pig knew him here. Here he could move freely and do what he wanted without being constantly addressed. That he is now so present in Loket is the result of the fact that one recognized afterwards what an important person he was. My favorite saying from Goethe is: "With knowledge, doubt grows."
