Very impressive site. Especially the split granite rock with its many shells has its own charisma and conveys a feeling for the special place existing since time immemorial with a lot of events around the stone.

We often stop here, stay in a chapel with the Holy Stone and evaluate the distance between two stones. As soon as an ox-cart passes between two stones, the end of the world will come! But for now, everything is fine, so stay calm. You can wash yourself with healing water from a nearby well in the chapel to make sure that you stay healthy and at least until your next visit. Come on!

According to tradition, the Virgin Mary and Jesus appeared here on large boulders around 1500. Hence the name "Holy Stone". The stone on which the Madonna sat was said to have split in half later as a sign of the truth of the revelation, and the two parts are to be separated from each other. When the stones are so far apart that a horse-drawn carriage passes there, judgment day is to come. The first report of a miraculous healing comes from 1634, when the three-year-old daughter of the bricklayer Šimon Stepinger recovered. In 1655, Anna Kristýna Pöperlová had an abbess of Poor Clares from Český Krumlov built a pilgrimage church here, to which she donated a painting of the Virgin Mary of the Snows. In the first half of the 18th century, the chapel was extended to a large church. In the years 1848–1854, a congregation of Redemptorists expelled from Vienna worked at the pilgrimage church, in the years 1895–1924 the Congregation of the Petrinites, and after them until 1950 again the Redemptorists. According to the 1913 list of pilgrimage sites in the Des Osterreichers Wallfahrtsorte by the Austrian priest Alfred Hoppe, Svatý Kámen was at that time the third most visited pilgrimage site in southern Bohemia (after the Bechyně monastery and Dobrá Voda) . [1] After 1948, the pilgrimage site was destroyed, the building fell into disrepair, and the interior of the church was looted. The church was used to house sheep, its tower as a guard voice for the Border Guard. In 1975, three arms of the cloisters with the so-called monastery adjoining the church were demolished. In Austria, to the right of the road between Dolní Dvořiště and Freistadt, an almost exact replica of this church was built in 1984, including both stones. After 1989, the church building was restored with the cooperation of Czechs, Austrians and Germans, but its interior was irretrievably destroyed and practically nothing of it has survived. The main pilgrimages, which take place on August 5 (consecration of the church) and August 15 (Assumption), were renewed, in addition to the Holy Mass in Czech and German every Sunday from May to October.
