Původně Kouřim měla brány čtyři, mnoho bašt, věží a fortnu.
The Prague Gate is the only preserved gate from the Kouřim fortification. It was built in the 13th century and is linked to two strips of fortifications. Originally Kouřim had four gates, many bastions, towers and a fort.

Originally four gates were led to the city - besides the Prague one it was Kolínská, Olešecká and Malotická. The last possible entry into the city was called an executioner´s wicket - it was the smallest gate of all with a simple defensive system. That was the only place the family of the city's executioner could come in and out of town. After the Hussite wars, all the gates were reinforced by the so-called pre-gate areas, of which only the remainder of the half-rounded tower of the former Malotická Gate was preserved. The two-storey prismatic tower of the Prague Gate was built in the third quarter of the 13th century and today it is one of the best preserved buildings of i´ts kind in Central Europe - although it does not look like it used to be. The earlier trigger lattice in the northern (outer) part of the gothic passage disappeared, the extensive pre-excavation was broken and the city moat with the stone bridge was covered in 19th century. The former inner floors were only accesible from adjoining defending walls, the existing external staircase was built only after the demolition of the walls in the 19th century. The gate was partly repaired in 1993 and again in 1998, and a major overhaul took place in 2011-12.

The last possible entrance to the city was the Kat's fort, the smallest gate of all with a simple defense system. People of the "unclean state", that is, the family of the city executioner, passed through it. After the Hussite wars, all the gates were strengthened by the construction of the so-called forecourt, of which only the rest of the half-cylindrical tower of the former Malotice Gate has been preserved. The former trigger grille in the northern (outer) part of the Gothic passage disappeared, the extensive forecourt was demolished and the city moat with a stone bridge was filled in.
