V 17. století vyhořel, opravy byly dokončeny v roce 1642. Po zřízení Českobudějovické diecéze se kostel stal katedrálním kostelem českobudějovických biskupů. V letech 1790–1952 existovalo Českobudějovické arcikněžství.
The foundations of the diocese of České Budějovice were laid around 1265. The Dean's Church of Sts. Nicholas was built in the second half of the 13th century. In the 17th century it burned down, the repairs were completed in 1642. After the establishment of the Diocese the church became a cathedral church of the Bishops of České Budějovice. In the years 1790-1952 there was the České Budějovice Archdiocese.
