Two centuries ago, in 1808, the forest assistant Jiljí Merkl discovered a large spring of iron water in the beech of the Fürstenberg branch. The spring began to be frequently visited, as the rumor of the healing effects of spring water soon spread among the people. Prince Fürstenberk had a chapel built above the spring and a spa building with two baths nearby. The administrator of the Kynkal spa selected 20 tailors for their use. The water source was dedicated to St. Giles. Prince Fürstenberk chose the name of this saint to commemorate the discoverer of the spring. Another reason was that St. Among other things, Jiljí is the patron saint of hunters, forests, the disabled, lepers and the protector of forest animals. Certainly the ideal patron for forest spas. But people named the place themselves Merkovka or Merklovka. It can be read from history that the operation of the spa weakened during the First World War and later these services ceased to be provided completely. Even in the post-war period, trips to Merkovka were organized by various associations and organizations. Occasional concerts were also held here. The last was a concert by a mining band sometime in 1948 or 1949. Then, unfortunately, Merkovka was met by the fate of many monuments, the maintenance of which was neglected. In the Lužnice chronicle, the chronicler Laun described the destruction of this once popular tourist destination: "In the spring of 1963, the demolition of buildings at the former Merkovce excursion site began. The house, the former princely spa, was demolished and was converted into an apartment for a forest worker, and Merkovka is losing its charm with the demolition of these buildings, and everything is now in a desolate state on Merkovka. to the nearby pond, where red fish used to be twenty years ago. The futile call for the Merkovka memorial site to be preserved is not understood. " Of all the original buildings, only a part of the cellar remains in the hillside. Today's Merkovka is still a place that is still worth a visit. Red fish swim in the pond again and above the spring Lesy České republiky built a small wooden chapel, next to it there is a sitting area for tourists with an information board describing the history of the former spa. To this day, you can refresh yourself with excellent iron water or walk through the old beeches. You will not leave empty-handed here during the mushroom season. Other interesting things from this place certainly include the fact that as for the spring from the well, it is said that several people have recovered from their diseases. The founder of Sokol, Mr. Tyrš, spoke to his future wife Renata here in 1869, when he was here to ask for the hand of her mother, who was on holiday with her at Merkovka.
