Osídlení vzniklo v blízkosti železárny a Hamry patřili k nejstarším střediskům se železářskou výrobou v tomto regionu. Počátkem 17. století postavili Sobkové z Kornic poblíž svých železných hamrů jednoduchou pozdně renesanční tvrz. Po smrti Jana Sobka připadly Hamry císaři a během dalšího století se majitelé střídali, až ves s tvrzí roku 1769 koupil Jan Norbert z Pöttingu. Roku 1860 panství získává rodina Nevolů, která nechala zámek po velkém požáru v roce 1894 novobarokně přestavět. Od roku 1950 zámek i s dvorcem spravovalo místní JZD, po roce 1972 došlo k jeho rekonstrukci. Zajímavostí je, že zámeček byl předlohou pro povídku K. V. Raise "Špačci"a ve 2. polovině 19. století proslul návštěvami českých vlastenců, jako byl F. Palacký či F. Rieger. Svobodné Hamry is part of the village of Vysočina in the district of Chrudim, the first written mention dates from 1654. The settlement was established near the ironworks and Hamry was one of the oldest centers with iron production in this region. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Sobks of Kornice built a simple late Renaissance fortress near their iron mills. After the death of Jan Sobek, Hamry fell to the emperor and during the next century the owners changed until the village with the fortress was bought in 1769 by Jan Norbert of Pötting. In 1860, the estate was acquired by the Nevol family, who had the chateau rebuilt in the Neo-Baroque style after a large fire in 1894. From 1950, the chateau and the manor were managed by the local collective farm, and after 1972 it was reconstructed. It is interesting that the chateau was a model for K. V. Raise's short story "Starlings" and in the second half of the 19th century it was famous for visits by Czech patriots such as F. Palacký or F. Rieger.
