The town of Skuteč solemnly presented an interesting memorial to the 16th meridian passing through the town on the occasion of the centenary of the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia on October 28, 2018. According to the information board, the project was implemented on the basis of textual and graphic materials by Matěj Vostrčil and Eliška Jirásková, students of the Grammar School of the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta in Skutče. The memorial, a granite pillar with a memorial plaque and an information board, is located in Božena Němcová Street opposite the cemetery on the edge of the car park. A granite pillar with a memorial plaque marks the passage of the 16th meridian through the town of Skuteč, de facto coming from the North Pole, in the direction from the village Štěpánov over the edge of the cemetery and heading to the public airport in Skutče heading for the south pole of the Earth. There are information boards on the site concerning the so-called meridians designated on Earth and the passage of the 16th meridian, from north to south in the Czech Republic, for example, the towns of Třebechovice pod Orebem, Holice and Velké Meziříčí. From the North Pole in the Arctic to the South Pole in Antarctica, in addition to the international waters of the world's oceans, the 16th meridian runs through the territories of Norway, Sweden, Poland, the Czechia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Libya, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Namibia. The 16th meridian of the so-called eastern longitude (east of the zero meridian) passes through the town of Skuteč in the Pardubice Region, while the so-called noon is shifted by 1 hour and 4 minutes compared to the zero meridian passing through London (according to the information on the information board). The monument, also with a bench for rest, is on the edge of the parking lot, accessible for the disabled and at any time. It is certainly an interesting attraction on the green marked tourist route of the Czech Tourists Club, in the section leading from the city center around TIC and the Municipal Museum to the 16th meridian monument, from there the route continues to the former Malhošť nature reserve and then to the ruins of Košumberk castle.
