Church of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary in České Budějovice - Žižkova tř. 251/6

One of the biggest surprises in Budweis! First, I walked past the facade (set in a row of blocks of flats) without noticing anything. Only when I stood in the middle of Senovážné náměstí and scanned the surrounding area 360 degrees, just so that I would not miss any sacral monument, I saw a church tower in the courtyard. I returned immediately and the reward was a tour of the church without payment and almost in private (there was only one visitor inside). It is not for nothing that it is stated that the decoration of the church is one of the most beautiful examples of so-called Beuron art (historical school of ecclesiastical art) in southern Bohemia. The Roman Catholic Church was built together with the religious house of the Congregation of the Brethren of the Blessed Sacrament (Petrin) by the local builder J. Stabernak between 1899 and 1900. The single-nave building with a vestibule and a square choir with a semicircular apse replaced the temporary chapel from 1888, dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Lourdes. The result of the implementation of a project developed by a Benedictine from the Prague monastery in Emmaus is a work with rich decorativeness, drawing on the traditions of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture. The entrance facade of the church respects the line of the facades of the surrounding buildings. The emphasis on the mass of the church was achieved by a large figural mosaic depicting the foundation of the church, the entrance itself is highlighted by stone pilasters with figures of angels. The greatest care of the founders was paid to the decoration of the main altar, the carved coffered ceiling is also very impressive. One of the biggest Budějovice surprises for me! I saw the church just across the bars and it worked so beautifully, but I wanted to learn more about the church. Unfortunately, it was closed, although it was written on the web site that it is open every day. After the call I was told that the tours are only until October and that they are probably wrong on the web.

A relatively unobtrusive church in České Budějovice with interior decoration in an unconventional style. Occasionally open for sightseeing, for example at night churches.

Beautiful church with nice decoration.

Even though it was closed, one can walk in and look through the grille. The interior is beautiful, much reminiscent of Orthodox churches in south-east Europe. Entrance from the street is quite masked ?.

Very beautifully decorated and interesting church. I recommend visiting Bystrokočko opposite on the way to the cat café.
