At the end of the 19th century, Roudnice nad Labem was a town where economic and cultural life developed. The then burgher boy's school (since 1874) and the girls' burgher school (since 1883) were no longer sufficient for the growing number of pupils. Therefore, in 1907, the city council, led by the patriotic mayor Ervín Špindler, announced a competition for a new building for burgher schools. The design of the architect Viktor Šulc from Pilsen won. The facade was designed by architect R. Fürst from Brandýs nad Labem. The construction was started in the spring of 1911 by the local construction company of Stanislav Plechatý. Already in September 1912, teaching began. The school was conceived generously for its time and its internal division was extensive. It had 19 classrooms, 5 drawing rooms and offices, 3 principals, 2 choir rooms, a gym, a spa, 14 cabinets and two apartments (for principals and janitors).
