Hamrštejn

The Hamrštejn Nature Reserve is located in the western part of the Machnín cadastral area, on the promontory of Zámecký kopec (375 m above sea level) surrounded by the Lužická Nisa and bordered by a short saddle with the Liberec – Hrádek nad Nisou – Žitava – Rybniště railway line. The ruins of Hamrštejn Castle are located on the northern, smaller peak of Zámecký Hill. Opposite the southern promontory of the hill, the reservation continues on the opposite northern slope to the Liberec – Děčín railway line. The reserve protects unique communities of thermophilic species within the Ještěd-Kozák ridge, the occurrence of which is related both to the connection of this area with the warmer region of Lusatia and to its medieval deforestation. Although small, but nice ruins. Unfortunately, we climbed from the bottom of the water and it was a mess.

Nobody is anywhere on Friday afternoon, so a quiet visit. Worth a visit.

The remains of Hamrštejn Castle, which is located near the road connecting the Machnín district of Liberec with the picturesque Kryštof Valley, are not visible from the road. It is therefore optimal to follow the yellow sign from the center of Machnín, which is also part of the Odra - Nisa cycle path. The trail copies the romantic meanders of the Lužická Nisa and leads to the slopes of Zámecký kopec, at the top of which the remains of a medieval castle rise. The name of the castle is often associated with the existence of a hammer mill, where pig iron driven by a water wheel was processed pig iron.

The ruins of Hamrštejn Castle are a perfectly hidden little gem in the woods not far from the Machnín hrad train station. It is only a few minutes away from the Liberec train station. The torso of the tower remains from the medieval castle, which can be climbed without much effort. A part of the perimeter masonry is then preserved on the opposite rocky promontory. Ideal as a destination for a trip or walk.

As there are few reviews, it was quite busy on the holiday. Probably because it's a small ruin, but very nice. Quite well-preserved perimeter walls and towers is also a big piece ?. Although the weather was not too bad, the visit was worth it.
