Beautiful place above the creek in the wonderful countryside. I come back here again.

If you want to get to Vimberk by bus (either from Rokycany / Dobriv or from Strašice), it is best to get off at the stop with the archaic name "Melmatěj" (you will not find it on Google maps). An abandoned place in the forest, where the only sign of civilization is the asphalt road you come for. I got a rumor about a mill that once worked somewhere in these places, so it immediately occurred to me that one of the millers was named Matěj. But I had no idea how the two local names are combined in the legends - Melmatěj and Vimberk (Wimberg). Unfortunately, there is little space to describe the whole story (you can find it on the web), so let's start with the description of the place itself. Today, the completely defunct Vimberk Castle is a mystery to historians. Archaeologists date its origin to the second half of the 13th century and its demise probably to a hundred years later, when it was destroyed by a massive fire during the campaign of Charles IV. against the rebellious Rosenbergs. The reason for building the fortress was probably the need to manage the local iron ore mines, but we can not be sure, because no written mentions have been preserved. The medieval building most likely took the place of an older settlement dated to the late or younger fortified period. Due to its archaic appearance, Tomáš Durdík proposed to classify it as a transitional type of castle. Even its name is unclear. According to some sources, it could be Chlukov Castle, which has not yet been located. Remains of daub (a mixture of clay and straw used to smear wooden structures for insulation and fire protection) were found in the castle area, and vice versa - no remains of masonry or mortar were found. From this it can be concluded that the castle was wooden. On the western side of the rampart, there is an object sunk into the rock, which could have been an earthing ground. The location is well marked, so you can't miss it, but don't expect anything pompous. Time has wiped out most traces of human gain, but instead (and perhaps because of it) it looks raw and impressive. TIP: if you intend to spend the night in the area, or you are caught by bad weather, you can use the space of a large tramp shelter not far from the fort towards Strašice (see photo). The medieval object is very likely to be the place of a larger settlement dated to the late times of Bohemian fortified settlement. Even it´s name is unclear. According to some sources, it could be Chlukov Castle, which has not been localized yet. On the west side of the valley is a object carved in rock, which could be underground living room. The location is well marked, so you can not miss it, but do not expect anything grandiose. Time has already wiped out most of the traces of human achievements, but instead (and perhaps because of that) it is a raw and powerful place. TIP: If you intend to stay in the vicinity, or bad weather surprises you, you can use the spacious tramp cave near the fortification towards Strašice (see photo). Do not forget to clean up after leaving.

There was not much left on the fort. If there was no sign, you wouldn't even notice the fort. However, if you have a trip around, the place is definitely worth a visit.

It is said to be the ruins of the castle, but the remains of the building does not look. However, hiking is worth it, there is beautiful nature .....
