Jabloncem prochází železniční trať č. 036 Liberec - Tanvald - Železný Brod. Na území města je celkem 5 železničních stanic. Jablonec figuroval už v plánech na vybudování první železniční tratě na severu Čech z Pardubic do Liberce, která byla dokončena 1. 5. 1859. Nakonec spojovacím bodem s touto železnicí pro město se po 29 let stala železniční stanice Rychnov u Jablonce nad Nisou, kam se dojíždělo dostavníky, drožkami a těžkými povozy. V polovině září 1887 došlo k uzavření smlouvy mezi c. k. Zemskou bankou a stavebním podnikatelem, vrchním inženýrem Sternem. 4. října 1887 tak byl proveden slavnostní výkop a tento den je počátkem budování jablonecké železnice. První úsek trati z Liberce do Jablonce se stavěl zhruba jeden rok a slavnostní okamžik otevření přišel 25. listopadu 1888, kdy byl v 9 hodin vypraven vlak z Jablonce nad Nisou do Liberce.
