Malebná obec vznikla koncem 14. století jako předhradí hradu Falkenštejn, který strážil Českou kupeckou stezku z Čech do Saska a Lužice. Dnes je jedním z turistických center Českého Švýcarska. Najdeme tu veškeré služby, které potřebume na cestách, infocentrum, možnosti stravování, ubytování a dalších služeb. Cesty lemují řady malebných roubených a hrázděných chalup, na hřbitově stojí barokní kostel sv. Jana Nepomuckého. Dnes tu žije kolem 400 obyvatel.
