After the defeat of the revolt of the Czech Protestant states on Bílá hora (in 1621), the townspeople of Tábor also had to convert to Catholicism. Monks of the Barefoot Augustinian Order were invited to Tábor to spread the new faith. The early Baroque monastery complex was built in part of the historic core with mostly uninhabited desolate houses. Material for the construction would be obtained from demolished houses, but also from purchased houses in the immediate vicinity, which after the demolition enabled the establishment of Klášterní náměstí. A total of 44 houses were destroyed as part of the construction of the monastery. The builder is Antonio de Alfiery, whose signature is on the surviving plans. The foundation stone was laid in 1642 and in 1666 the building was completed. The monastery was abolished by Emperor Francis I by decree of July 16, 1816.
