Nothing inside, just ordinary church without interior decoration

Convenient for mass goers: Catholic mass on working days at 15,30. Right at the city centre. Used to be a scolapian school, now a Salesian Parish with very pious clergy.

Silent place for meditation and prayer in the middle of the street chaos and rush. Not particularely beautiful but quiet and peaceful.

At the place where the Church of Holy Cross was later built, the house stood already in 1379. The neighboring house was also bought in 1547 by other burgher. In the Prussian War of 1757 both houses were damaged and the burned place was bought by the order of Piarists in 1758. In 1734 they asked the Empress Maria Theresa to settle in Prague. They received permission only in 1752 and immediately began teaching in Celetná Street. The school was soon so crowded that the house in Celetná was not enough. Therefore, the order bought in 1758 two burnt houses in the street named Na Příkopě. The construction of the gymnasium and the church was commenced in 1811 according to Jiří Fisher's plans. In 1869, the Education Act terminated the activities of Piarists and the school was handed over to the state. In 1912, the last Piarists sold the buildings and the church. There were proposals to demolish the church, but the Monuments Board and the Club for Old Prague managed to save the church. Then the closed church was handed over to the Salesians and re-consecrated on May 16, 1937. In April 1950 the Salesians were interned in the Osek Monastery in northern Bohemia. The Communist regime expels them from this church. Thirty-two years later they left the church altogether and only return to the church after the Velvet Revolution in 1990. Regular worship services take place here from Monday to Friday at 10.00 and 15.30, on Saturdays from 10.00 (except during the summer holidays) and on Sundays from 10.30, 11.30 (Italian) and 19.00. The church is open for tours from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 18.00, on Saturdays from 9.00 to 12.00 (except during summer holidays), on Sundays even in the evening: 9.00-12.00 and 18.00-20.00. Na místě, kde byl později vystavěn kostel Sv. Kříže, stál již roku 1379 dům Kříže řečeného z Jíčína, který měl v těchto místech sladovnu. Sousední dům, zvaný U Kbelských, byl koupen roku 1547 Václavem Kbelským. V pruské válce 1757 byly oba domy poškozeny a spáleniště koupil roku 1758 řád Piaristů. Ti v roce 1734 požádali císařovnu Marii Terezii, aby se mohli usadit v Praze. Povolení dostali až roku 1752 a hned téhož roku začali vyučovat v Celetné ulici. Škola byla brzy tak přeplněna, že dům v Celetné nestačil. Proto řád koupil v roce 1758 dvě spáleniště domů Na Příkopě. Stavba gymnasia a kostela byla podle plánů Jiřího Fishera zahájena k roku 1811. V dubnu 1824 byla stavba kolaudována a 9. 5. 1824 byl kostel vysvěcen. K roku 1869 Školský zákon ukončil činnost piaristů a škola byla předána do rukou státu. V roce 1912 prodávají poslední piaristé budovy a kostel. Existují návrhy kostel zbourat, ale Památkovému úřadu a Klubu za starou Prahu se podařilo kostel zachránit. Poté byl zavřený kostel předán do správy salesiánů a znovu posvěcen 16.5.1937. V dubnu 1950 jsou salesiáni internováni v klášteře Osek v severních Čechách. Komunistický režim je z tohoto kostela vyhání. O dvaatřicet let později kostel opustili úplně a vrací se sem až po sametové revoluci v roce 1990 přebírají duchovní správu kostela. Pravidelné bohoslužby tu probíhají od pondělí do pátku v 10.00 a 15.30, v sobotu od 10.00 (mimo letních prázdnin) a v neděli od 10.30, 11.30 (italsky) a 19.00. K prohlídce je kostel otevřen od pondělí do pátku 9.00-18.00, v sobotu 9.00-12.00 (mimo letních prázdnin), v neděli dokonce i večer: 9.00-12.00 a 18.00-20.00.
