Hlavní hradba měla 24 věží a 3 hlavní brány (Pražskou, Říšskou a Lubskou). Rozsáhlé úseky byly bourány v souvislosti s růstem Klatov a rozšiřováním nové zástavby vně středověkého půdorysu města. Klatovy is one of the Czech towns with the relatively best preserved remains of the fortifications, so I reserved all afternoon for their discovery (due to the small size of the medieval core of the city, it is sufficient time). If you are a fan of fortification systems, I can definitely recommend a visit to Klatovy. Within this short review it is not possible to describe everything, so if you are interested in the topic, I recommend a small book called historical-tourist guide to Klatovy. The city walls date from the 13th century and were created soon after the foundation of the town by the king Přemysl Otakar II. The main wall had 24 towers and 3 main gates (Pražská, Říšská and Lubská). In front of this wall was a moat and an outer wall with another moat. The outer wall had 13 horseshoe bastions. The fortification was best preserved on the eastern side of town. Double walls are best seen from Hostašovy orchards. Nearby you will also find two defensive towers called "Okrouhlice" ("Round-towers" - one in the Vrchlický park, the other by the open-air cinema). The bastions at the inner castle wall in Pavlíkova Street are part of residential houses, the prismatic bastion between No. 7 and No. 8 is even used as a tea room. At the beginning of the first half of the 19th century, the local walls suffered the same fate as in other Czech cities. Extensive sections were demolished in connection with the growth of Klatovy and the expansion of new buildings outside the medieval ground plan of the city.
