S odchodem většiny německého obyvatelstva v rámci odsunu sudetských Němců z Československa ve druhé polovině 40. let 20. století zůstala řada hrobů německých rodin opuštěna a bez údržby. Krátce poté tu byl vztyčen památník obětem a padlým v druhé světové válce. Today's main Sušice burial ground was established in 1878 on a large plot of land outside the town as a replacement for the cemetery "U Matky Boží", which could no longer be expanded. The first to be buried here was the local notary Eduard Šebesta. Shortly after the cemetery was founded, a neo-Romanesque entrance gate and ceremonial hall were built. With the departure of the majority of the German population as part of the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1940s, a number of graves of German families remained abandoned and without maintenance. Shortly afterwards, a memorial was erected here to the victims and fallen of World War II.
