Původně se jmenovalo Basilejské, v roce 1911 bylo přejmenováno na Havlíčkovo, za německé okupace (1940–1945) na Husovo a po osvobození se znovu přejmenovalo na Havlíčkovo. Prostor parku tvoří čtverec o rozměrech přibližně 70 x 70 metrů. V jižním rohu plochy stojí nejvýznamnější budova náměstí - žižkovská radnice (čp. 700) - postavená v novorenesančním slohu v letech 1889-1891 podle plánů Jana Šimáčka. Nároží tvoří výrazná válcová věž s hodinami, zakončená kupolí. Na žižkovské radnici se dvakrát ženil Václav Havel.
