Rainer Maria Rilke Monument

A monument to a Prague native and one of the most important German poets was unveiled on Řezáčová náměstí in June 2015. It was initiated by the Rilk Foundation. The work has the form of a granite block, on which the last verses from Rylka's Ninth Elegy are engraved bilingually. The author was born in Prague on December 4, 1875 in the family of a German official, Josef Rilke. He was a student of the Military Cadet School in Hranice na Moravě. He later studied literature, art history and philosophy at the universities of Prague and Munich. He became one of the most important German lyricists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He also wrote one novel and several short stories. He left Prague in his youth (after his studies) and died on December 29, 1926 in the Valmont sanatorium near Montreux in Switzerland. Rilke also has a memorial plaque in Prague, which you will find on the house of the former German school in Na Příkopě Street, which he attended.
