The monument to the Prague native and one of the most important German poets was unveiled on Řezáčovo Square in June 2015. It was initiated by the Rilke Foundation. The work takes the form of a granite block on which the last verses of Rilke's Ninth Elegy are engraved in bilingual script. The author was born in Prague on 4 December 1875 in the family of Josef Rilke, a German clerk. He attended the Military Cadet School in Hranice na Moravě. Later he studied literature, art history and philosophy at the universities of Prague and Munich. He became one of the most important lyricists writing in German at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He also wrote one novel and several short stories. He left Prague at a young age (after his studies) and died on 29 December 1926 in the Valmont sanatorium near Montreux in Switzerland. Rilke has also a memorial plaque in Prague, which can be found on the building of the former German school in Na Příkopě Street, which he attended.
