Vznikl začátkem roku 1990 na základě iniciativy historické komise Občanského fóra. Cílem bylo vybudovat pracoviště pro nezávislý výzkum československých dějin v období 1938–1989, jenž byl za komunistického režimu vystaven soustavnému ideologickému dozoru, cenzuře a lhaní.
The Institute for Contemporary History is a department of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. It´s mission is to carry out basic research on Czech and Czechoslovak history after 1938 in an international context. It was founded in early 1990 on the initiative of the Civic Forum's historic commission. The aim was to build a workplace for independent research of Czechoslovak history in the period 1938–1989, which was exposed to constant ideological supervision, censorship and lying under the communist regime.
