The city of Varnsdorf is surrounded on three sides by the border with the Federal Republic of Germany. The town has both industrial and garden character. So far, the original scattered village floor plan forms a unique urban unit. In 1868, the once largest village of Austria-Hungary, which was formed by the merger of several settlements, was promoted to a town. It is the second largest city in the district of Děčín with a population of around 15,000.
