Nový Herštejn is a castle ruin on a wooded hill near the village of Kdyně in the district of Domažlice. The founder of the castle was probably Bušek ll in the first half of the fourteenth century. of Velhartice was the son of Bušek l. of Velhartice, who was the chamberlain of Margrave Karel and died in 1337 in Merano. Bušek ll. played an important role at Charles' court. His successors on the estate in 1348 and 1349 were his relatives. Protiva and Břeněk from Herštejn. After Břeňek, the castle was acquired by the marshal of the royal court, Ježek of Velhartice. When he died, the widow Ofka of Újezdce and the minor son Jan, who got into a dispute with the Rosenbergs after 1385, took over the inheritance. They probably conquered Nový Herštejn and captured Jan of Velhartice. After Jan of Velhartice, the castle was inherited by his son Záviš of Velhartice. Jan Herštejnský of Velhartice became the next owner of the castle at the end of the reign of King George of Poděbrady. He also led a dispute with Bavaria, and in 1474 the army captured Duke Albrecht Jan Herstein. But after his release, Jan began looting Bavarian farms again. The Bavarians undertook a new military expedition and at the beginning of February 1475 Nový Herštejn conquered Jan and captured the castle. At the beginning of the 16th century, the Herštejn estate was bought by Půta Švihovský of Rýzmberk. After his death in 1504, Nový Herštejn sons belonged to Břetislav. The indebted Břetislav began to sell his estates. Nový Herštejn with eight villages was bought in 1524-1534 by the royal town of Domažlice, whose property was confiscated to take part in the estate resistance against King Ferdinand I. In 1549, the estate of Nový Herštejn was sold to Karlštejn burgrave Sebastian Markvart of Hrádek. However, its owners did not live in the ruined castle but in the fortress in Únějovice. About 5 km from Kdyně, in the protected landscape area, are the ruins of Nový Herštejn Castle. From Kdyně, take the yellow hiking trail. In Podzámčí, follow the red road, which will take you directly to the castle. It is a beautiful quiet place. The journey is not difficult, not even for children. An inconspicuous ruin hidden in the woods just off the Koráb lookout tower to another Rýzmberk ruin. It is not visible from anywhere in the distance (from the lookout tower), but whoever comes here will surprise him with its vastness and the well-preserved rest of the castle palace.
