The memorial of the Battle of Kolín was built in 1841 on the then Novoveský vrch, now called Bedřichov (279 m above sea level), by the owner of the Kolín estate, Václav Veith, according to the design of the architect Václav Weinzettl. The solemn consecration was to take place on the occasion of the Austro-Prussian military exercise in Cologne from September 22 to 28, 1841, but the court's war council recommended that nothing resemble this battle be placed on the already built monument. For this reason, the planned reliefs with battle scenes, designed by the famous Munich sculptor Michael Ludwig von Schwanthaler, author of a number of monuments in Germany and Austria, were not even installed on it. A simple structure made of sandstone blocks in the shape of a tall, slender truncated pyramid remained officially unmarked until 1889, when it was repaired and provided with brief texts in Czech and German. The inscription was later removed and lost. On June 18, 2005, a new memorial plaque, designed by academic sculptor Miloslav Smrkovsky, with Czech, German and English texts, was ceremoniously unveiled at the monument.
