Po ukončení těžby zůstaly zachovány těžní věže a část provozních objektů a bývalý důl byl prohlášen za kulturní památku. Důl Alexander patřil mezi doly Severní dráhy Ferdinandovy.Od roku 1898 až do roku 1926, kdy se Alexander stal součástí sousedního dolu Zárubek, zde bylo vytěženo 5 910 960 tun uhlí. Poté bylo důlní pole dobýváno pomocí důlních děl ze strany dolu Zárubek.V zájmu památkové péče jsou nejen těžní věže s jámovými budovami, kotelna, ale i bývalá kočárovna, správní budova atd. Uhelný důl Alexander byl prohlášen kulturní památkou Ministerstvem kultury ČR 24. září 2001.V areálu zachovaných povrchových pracovišť Dolu Alexander dnes sídlí Charita Sv. Alexandra. Nachází se v městské části Ostrava- Kunčičky a vybudován doslova na zelené louce. Založen roku 1896 po průzkumech naleziště uhlí z jižní strany od dolu Vilém. Prošel mnoha změnami a modernizacemi a fungoval až do roku 1992, kdy byla těžba ukončena. V roce 1993 byla zasypána těžní jáma dosahující hloubky 945 metrů a rok poté i výdušná jáma s hloubkou 775 metrů. A v roce 2001 prohlášena Ministerstvem kultury za historickou památku. Co se týče architektury je důl Alexander nejhezčím dolem v Ostravě a stojí za povšimnutí. Pro svou kompozici v barokním stylu je nazýván hornickým Versailles. Díky výstavbě tohoto dolu, byly s rozšiřující se těžbou postaveny dvě hornické kolonie, stará výstavba 1894- 1899 a nová výstavba 1900- 1904, místními zvaná "Kolonka". Tyto kolonie byly zbourány a zůstalo jen část domů v prolukách. Parková úprava ke zkrášlení míst okolo dolu a odpočinku pochází z přibližně stejného období. Od 1. 8. 1926 byl důl spojen s dolem Zárubek s podzemním převedením těžby a sloužil také jako pomocný důl. Není bez zajímavosti, že součástí areálu bývala i parková plocha, která se stala prvním sídlem ostravské zoo. V provozu byl v letech 1896 až 1994, těžba uhlí z jakloveckých a hrušovských vrstev probíhala mezi lety 1898 až 1926 s ročním objemem 108 - 305 tisíc tun. Důlní pole mělo rozlohu 247 ha a bylo otevřeno dvěma jámami do hloubky 1120 m na 10. patro. Těžební činnost dolu byla ukončena 31. prosince 1992.
