First university in Central Europe. Famous for the University of Prague, but better known as the local University of Charles.

Karolinum is a national cultural monument, a symbol of Charles University. From the 14th century, the seat of the oldest house of the Charles University, or the Great College (Collegium Caroli), was founded by Charles IV. for the twelve masters of Prague's higher education. At first, the university did not have it´s own building. The first university college was founded in 1366. The historical building of Karolinum is of younger date - Charles´ son Václav IV. gave it to the university. It was formerly one of the most prestigious old-town houses, which belonged to the coin-master Johlin Rotlev. The building was modified and expanded into a gorgeous three-story Gothic building.
