Stavba kostela započala v roce 1259, dostaven byl ve 14. století. Za stavbou kostela stál známý šlechtic ze slavného rodu Vítkovců - Vok z Rožmberka. Trojlodní klášterní kostel byl ve své době vývojovým mezníkem v české gotické architektuře. Kostel má čtyři kaple, jeden hlavní a osm vedlejších oltářů. Původně raně gotická stavba prošla několika úpravami, které její podobu změnily. Nejstarší zachovanou částí kostela je dnešní sakristie. The beautiful monastery church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in the grounds of the Cistercian monastery in Vyšší Brod. The construction of the church began in 1259, it was completed in the 14th century. Behind the construction of the church was a well-known nobleman from the famous Vítkovci family - Vok from Rožmberk. The three-nave monastery church was a development milestone in Czech Gothic architecture in its time. The church has four chapels, one main and eight side altars. Originally an early Gothic building, it underwent several modifications that changed its appearance. The oldest preserved part of the church is today's sacristy.

It consists of a main nave and two lateral ones of the same height. In the transverse nave four chapels are enabled, The main altarpiece in early Baroque style dates from the years 1644-1646 and as a curiosity to say that the main painting is changed four times a year, at the Assumption of the Virgin, at the Birth, Crucification and Resurrection of Christ. The visit has to be guided, since the church is closed.
