The former Augustinian-canon monastery in an originally Gothic building from around 1379, which was rebuilt in the early Baroque style between 1653-60 and further expanded in the High Baroque style, when a prelature was built according to a project by František Maximilian Kaňka in 1716. The establishment of the Augustinian convent is directly related to the foundation of the New Town of Prague. The highest section of the town wall breaking at the end of the new city fortification above the Nusle Valley was chosen as the site. The consecration of the church was the parsonal wish of Charles IV. He declared the Holy Charles the sovereign as his predecessor in the charter. It dates from 18 September 1350, the construction of the church probably began a year later, when the local section of the fortifications was completed.
