Elektrárenský komplex je situován v katastrálním území Prunéřova (Prunéřov), který je místní částí města Kadaň. Jedná se o uhelné elektrárny využívající hnědé uhlí z blízké hnědouhelné pánve. Název elektrárny získaly po obci Prunéřov, která prakticky celá padla těžbě uhlí v sedmdesátých letech 20. století. Vlastníkem a provozovatelem elektráren je společnost ČEZ. Elektrárny Prunéřov patří k největším znečišťovatelům ovzduší v České republice i celé Evropě. Provoz elektrárny Prunéřov I byl ukončen 30. června 2020. S provozováním modernizované části elektrárny Prunéřov II se počítá přibližně do roku 2037
The Prunéřov power plants, abbreviated EPRU I and EPRU II, are together the largest thermal power plants in the Czech Republic. The power plant complex is situated in the cadastral area of Prunéřov (Prunéřov), which is a local part of the town of Kadaň. These are coal-fired power plants using brown coal from a nearby brown coal basin. The power plant was named after the village of Prunéřov, which fell practically entirely on coal mining in the 1970s. The owner and operator of the power plants is ČEZ. The Prunéřov power plants are among the largest air pollutants in the Czech Republic and throughout Europe. The operation of the Prunéřov I power plant was terminated on 30 June 2020. The operation of the modernized part of the Prunéřov II power plant is expected until approximately 2037
