Prestigious Prague Grammar School

Honestly, the school has no reputation at all.

The beautifully renovated high school buildings, together with the chateau, the falconry building and the Art Nouveau church, form the most interesting and beautiful part of Libno. Realka was founded in 1907 and two years later it became a Real Grammar School. The school moved to a new building, designed by Karel Pecánek in the geometric Art Nouveau style (as did the falconry building), in 1914. During World War II, some members of the faculty actively participated in the resistance and several of them died in it. On May 5, 1945, the school building served as an insurgent headquarters for Prague 8. The school housed captured German soldiers and interned civilians. On May 7, German troops captured the school building and took the prisoners away. Among the most famous graduates were, for example, František Hrubín, Miloš Kirschner, and actress Jana Hlaváčová. Beautifully reconstructed high school buildings together with the castle, the Sokol house and the Art Nouveau church form the most interesting and beautiful part of Libeň. During World War II some professors were actively involved in the resistance and some of them were killed. On May 5, 1945, the school building served as a rebel headquarters for Prague 8. The captured German soldiers and interned civilians were placed in the school. On May 7, German troops captured the school building and took the prisoners away.
