I don't like it. It's supposed to be modern but actually it's just weird.

Near the embankment with benches from which a wonderful view of the Prague Castle opens.

According to the official Prague Tourism website, these unique group of sculptures not far from the Faculty of Philosophy is dedicated to its student Jan Palach, who burned himself on 16 January 1969 in protest against the Soviet occupation. The pair of sculptures called "The House of the Son" and "The House of the Mother" is a work of art by the American sculptor and architect of Czech origin John Hejduk. "The House of the Son," in light color, represents Jan Palach himself. "The Mother's House" is darker, as if it were rusty, and points to Palack's desperate mother. A plaque with the poem "The Burial of Jan Palach" by the American writer David Shapiro complements the installation with the symbolic flames.

We came across this quite by accident as we happened to alight a tram just beside the sculpture. They are very big up close and look good against the backdrop of the river and castle beyond

I came across this memorial by accident. I had no idea what it was, or what it represented. Just a few metres away I took a picture of a bronze memorial plaque of Jan Palach on the side of a building. Now I know what this is, and what it represents, I could kick myself for not taking a photo of them. I like the way one monument is in in Stainless Steel, and the other rusty. Art is always a personal interpretation in the eye of the beholder, but l think this works well. A monument to a Czech hero.

The House of the Suicide and the House of the Mother of the Suicide is a pair of sculptures in memorial to Jan Palach. The memorial features two cube like structures crowned with some devastating looking steel spikes. I admire the sentiments, but this is way to abstract. Plus one for the memorial to a Czech hero though.
