The monument to the famous Czech writer of the 19th century Karolina Svetla is also located on Charles Square, where, by the way, she lived nearby. Installed in 1910. The author of this monument is the Czech sculptor Gust Zoula. The stern, piercing gaze of Karolina the Light, descending from above on passers-by, involuntarily attracts and leads to a slight stupor. The monument is a bronze bust on a high pedestal lined with granite. A little about Carolina herself: she wrote under a pseudonym, her real name is Joanna Rott. During her life she wrote about 50 novels and short stories, mostly about village life. Her works are distinguished by the richness of imagination, the depth of psychological analysis and the artistry of presentation. Since 1878, she began to lose her sight and was forced to dictate her works for recording. Carolina was in associations for the emancipation of women. Led the community "Women's Production Association of the Czech Republic". Bozena Nemtsova had a great influence on Svetlaya's work. Also noteworthy is a strong friendship with Jan Neruda.

I hope that Mrs. Karolína would forgive me when I declare that the nearby statue of Eliška Krásnohorská is more pleasing to my eye. I will not elaborate anymore. But at least I'll write something about her here. Karolina Světlá, real name Johana Nepomucena Rottová, was born into an important and rich Rott family on February 24, 1830 in Prague and was 25,396 days old in this world. She was a Czech writer, she is considered the founder of a Czech village novel. Her life was full of change, not always positive issues. However, you can read something about her.

This remarkable and unconventional 19th-century woman, always passing me around in the memories of her favorite Podještědí.

This monument stands in tribute to Karolina Světlá, 19th century Czech author best known in her country for writing, A Village Novel, Nemodlenec and Kříž u potoka. She was a bit of a pioneer at a time when women were expected to adhere to gender roles. This monument features a bust of Světlá atop a plinth. The bust features both her head and the upper half of her torso. It depicts Světlá as an elderly woman, wearing a shawl with a rather stern look on her face. The plinth has her name written on it and also a message in Czech in gratitude for her contributions. The monument is located in Karlovo Park where there’s several monuments to Czech heroes. The monument is nothing special, but it’s worth a quick detour if visiting the park or the other monuments.
