Having passed through the Prague Gate, the street will lead you to the central square of Melnik, called the “Peace Square” in the era of the socialist past. Small multi-colored old houses, built by a friendly round dance, seem to part and form an irregularly shaped space. Such was the area of the ancient settlement and centuries ago. Narrow arcade galleries stretch almost all along the perimeter, in which you can hide from heavy rain or the scorching sun. Here, on the main square of Melnik, the most solemn events and city holidays are held. This was evidenced by an improvised scene set next to the town hall. In the central part of Peace Square there is a beautiful fountain with the grapevine composition "Grape Harvest". In the summer heat, local kids love to cut around him, dousing each other with water. Among the medieval buildings of the square, represented mainly by the mansions of wealthy citizens, in which now numerous shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels are located, the building of the Capuchin monastery stands out - today it is a museum of local history. The decoration of the square is the city hall, the building of which has been rebuilt more than once and therefore combines Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance styles.

Nejzachovalejší frontu domů představuje východní část s dochovaným loubím a s radniční budovou. The historical core of the town of Melnik evolved in the area of the original medieval settlement probably called Pšov, whose fortification is proven in the 9th century. As a town, Mělník is mentioned for the first time in the charter of King Přemysl Otakar II. from November 25, 1274. The irregular ground plan of the square copies the boundary of the original fortified fortified settlement. The most preserved front of the houses is on the eastern part of the square with the arcades and a town hall building. These are houses of all of Gothic origin, later modified. The vast Gothic cellars are preserved there. After all, the whole square with adjacent streets is undermined by the tunnels and cellars. They go several floors deep and are probably used especially in times of danger as a shelter for the inhabitants and their properties. In the Middle Ages, they served primarily as storage rooms for food and due to the favorable conditions and also for wine storage. Square - Rynek was the center of every city. Here markets, important moments of city life, manifestations, celebrations, gatherings or welcome visits took place. Typical arcades of Mělník´s square provide protection from bad weather and also serve for trading. A number of houses had house signs that are still visible: the Golden Star, the Blue Star, the Golden Swan, or the Golden Grape House. Besides other privileges, Melnik had the right of brewing, the right of the guts, and the right of the market, which belonged to the most important ones. The annual markets - the so-called fairs - took place twice a year. Lengths - elbows - are still hanging by the main entrance to the town hall. They served to verify the honesty of the goods sold. The shorter elbow is Czech, the longer is Austrian. The center of the square is made up of a medieval well, whose outlines and central aperture are marked directly in the pavement, not far from it is local fountain - the work of architect Jaroslav Fragner from 1938, the sculpture author Vinobraní is the academic sculptor Vincenc Makovský.

The irregularly shaped square forms the center of the historical part of the once royal or queen city. The buildings are of various historical origins and, as usual, the time-out exterior (town hall, monastery, etc.) there are also several buildings of modern times and fit well into older buildings. There is a beautiful fountain on the square with a sculpture Allegory of Viticulture by V. Makovský (1934).
