Largest cemetery in Prague with many graveyards, old and new, dating from the 17th century. You can walk for hours and even could get lost in the differents paths.

Its origins date back to 1680, when it was used during a plague epidemic, but its definitive valorization is due to Giuseppe II, who with a decree forbade, for hygienic reasons, that the dead were buried around the city churches. divides into 12 cemeteries, also distinguished by religion. In addition to the Hebrew one, which we will discuss later, there is a section for the burial of Orthodox Christians and another for Muslims. There is also the cemetery of Red Army soldiers who fell during the war in Czechoslovakia. The monumental tombs that are inside it are numerous and of great value, among which those in art nouveau style stand out. Olšany also has two large structures for the celebration of funeral rites.

Very large Cemetery, u could almost spend a whole day there , unfortunately I didn't spent much time there to find the older graves as the area I wandered around was all relatively new , my fault

Beautiful place. After nearly a week in Prague, we were running out of things to do. As the wife and I like cemeteries, we decided to pay a visit here. It was a short ride on the Metro, and practically right outside the Metro station. Its huge. We spent about 4 hours wandering around, and it was so peaceful. Its a proper oldy worldy cemetery, with loads of interesting mausoleums, and gravestones to read. Lots of places to sit and eat lunch too. We visited Kafka's grave, and also found Russian and British war graves there too. Highly recommended if you want to escape city centre Prague.

The largest cemetery in Prague. This is a huge cemetery in the Zizkov area of Prague. The older parts of the cemetery date back to the 1800’s and the crumbling Gothic monuments to the dead remind one of Pere Lachaise in Paris, or any famous Gothic graveyard. In the newer sections of the cemetery the graves are neat and well cared for. The whole graveyard has many large trees that help to make this a peaceful place. In the eastern section of the cemetery are memorials to fallen soldiers of different eras and nationalities. Near this section lies an Orthodox church in the midst of the tombs, which is frequented by Orthodox worshippers. The cemetery is not a tourist attraction per se, but it is a place for calm and thoughtful reflection. It can be good to walk through it in sunshine, rain, or snow, to see the place in all its hues. Note that the adjoining Jewish cemetery is closed on Saturdays.

Big, nice, beautiful. Grate place to have a walk almost with no people. Good in all seasons. But in summer there are some mosquitoes, be careful.

This is probably going to sound weird as a review for a cemetery but DAMN how beautiful it is! It is beautiful in every season and the melancholic walk you can take here is something else!
