The initiative to build a monument to fallen citizens in WWI was given by the Sokol physical education union in 1923. The money was donated by associations and individuals in a public collection, and the monument was built a year later in 1924. In 1928, a handful of soil from the famous battlefield of the First World War near Zborov in Galicia (today's Ukraine) was added to it. In 1946, a marble slab set in a five-pointed star in memory of the fallen Red Army soldiers was unveiled.
