The Institute of Hydrodynamics was established in 1952 as the Laboratory for Water Management of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The founder and first director was Professor Jan Smetana (1953 – 1962), a native of Svobodné Dvory near Hradec Králové. He graduated from the Prague Technical University in 1908 and became a doctor of technical sciences in July 1911. The Institute is housed in former residential houses of the former Majorka vineyard estate, that were built at the end of the 18th century. It was named after Elijah Magaur of Greinfenal, who owned the vineyards in the 17th century.
