Limnigraf on Výtoň - a clock that guards the river At first glance, the building looks like a special clock by the river. But the limnigraph on the shore stands precisely to measure the water in the Vltava and warn Praguers of a possible flood. Regular rotation of the cylinder is ensured by a clockwork machine, the water level and thus the flow in the river is sensed by a float. The Limnigraf on Prague's Výton has been telling encrypted numerical messages for one hundred and three years. Every second, the ink tip plots the current value of the water flow and thus the level in the Vltava on a paper-wrapped cylinder. Regular rotation of the cylinder is ensured by a clockwork, the water level and the flow derived from it are sensed by the float. The circular indicator of water flow is so large that the values ​​can be conveniently read from the window of the tram, which has a stop on Výtoň. In one second, one learns several things. In addition to the current state of the water in the Vltava, there is also the exact time, as a clock is installed just above the flow indicator. When you put together data on the water level and meteorological reports from the south of Bohemia, you can determine which rain far downstream in the Vltava, Otava, Sázava and Lužnice river basins raised the water level in Prague. The height of the water on the limnigraph is indicated by a large black hand. The unusual Art Nouveau building was built around 1907 in the shape of a romantic gloriette on a square floor plan complemented by a columned portico. The building is covered with a copper dome topped by a crown with a weather vane in the shape of a dog's head, which shows the direction of the wind. The Limnigraf is located opposite the Podskalská Customs House on Výton, directly opposite the tram stop. You can get here by trams 3, 7, 16, 17 or 21. The second Limnigraf is located on the same bank of the Vltava, further downstream, in the Old Town - Na Františku, opposite the St. Agnes Monastery.
