The first written mention of the village of Bezděz is from 1264, when it is reminded of the royal villicus, located in the courtyard, which was located in the neighborhood of the church (nowadays it houses the National Conservation Institute and the administration of the Bezděz castle.) However, Villicus was replaced in 1278 by the burgrades on the newly built castle Bezděz, founded by King Přemysl Otakar II. In 1291 King Václav II was promoted the place as the town, but in 1300 Hynek Berka from Dubá (with the king's permission) transferred the town rights to the newly founded Nový Bezděz, now Bělá pod Bezdězem. In 1898 the village Bezděz was largely destroyed by fire.

The municipal office is the way to the castle, ie if you turn right from the main road between the barracks to a smaller hill and it will not go further along the road. The office is maintained. Right next door is a tourist information center where you can buy souvenirs.
