It is remarkable how many interesting monuments you will find in this inconspicuous Central Bohemian village on the left bank of the Elbe. What's more, Obříství is associated with two Czech greats - Bedřich Smetana and Svatopluk Čech. The first of them often stayed here and the second time he married here, the second lived here for eight years. The village is first mentioned in 1290 as the property of Jan of Obříství, but it will probably be much older. From the 14th century it was an important transhipment point for goods floating on the Elbe. In the years 1841-51 there was a great development of trade and crafts.
