The Smiřický Palace (also known as "U Montágů") is an architecturally very interesting and significant landmark of the northern side of Malostranské square. An important palace object (later rebuilt in Baroque) was created by a joining of several older burgher houses. The current form was made after 1763 according to Josef Jäger's proposal. In this palace, which was the residence of one of the most powerful noble families in Bohemia, a revolt against Habsburg supremacy began in the spring of 1618. The meeting of the leaders of the anti-Habsburg states had a place here on 22nd of May of the same year, and the plan for the famous second defenestration was made at the initiative of Jan Albrecht of the Smiřice.

The four-storey Renaissance Smiřických Palace with four hexagonal turrets at the corners is architecturally the most important landmark in Malostranské Square in Prague; it was built in 1573 on the rubble of four Gothic houses and between 1603 and 1613 with a massive restructuring it was enlarged and raised; today the building with others nearby is used by the Parliament of the Czech Republic.
