Proč je tak neobvykle umístěn? Je to svérázné řešení dávného sporu mezi Starým Městem a Malou stranou (původně samostatná města pražská) o tom, komu náleží Vltava. Spor vyhrálo Staré Město pražské a nechalo umístit tady tuto sochu jako hraniční patník a následně vybíralo clo za vstup na Karlův most.
Great work, complementing Charles Bridge.
Why is it so unusually located? It is a unique solution to an ancient dispute between the Old Town and the Lesser Town (originally an independent city of Prague) over who owns the Vltava. The dispute was won by the Old Town of Prague, who placed this statue here as a border bollard and subsequently collected customs duties for the entrance to Charles Bridge.

Нынешняя версия статуи, на которой рыцарь изображает безбородого молодого человека с мечом, была создана скульптором Людвиком Шимеком на средства муниципалитета Праги в 1886 году. Предыдущая версия - позднеготическая работа неизвестного пражского скульптора 1500–1504 годов - была повреждена во время 30-летней войны, ее нижняя часть перенесена в музей.
Brunkvik is a character in Czech myths. This Czech legend is probably a modification of the legend of Heinrich the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria from Braunschweig.
The current version of the statue, in which the knight depicts a beardless young man with a sword, was created by sculptor Ludwik Szimek with funds from the Prague municipality in 1886. The previous version - a late Gothic work by an unknown Prague sculptor from 1500–1504 - was damaged during the 30-year war, and its lower part was moved to a museum.
